Verifying Your Age
This page is for members who've joined a server that uses AgeVerifier. It explains what to expect, what information you'll be asked for, and how your data is handled. Server admins can share this link with anyone who has questions about the process.
What happens when you join
When you join a server protected by AgeVerifier, you'll usually land in a lobby channel and see a welcome message. Most of the server is hidden until you verify your age — this is how the community keeps itself safe and age-appropriate. To get access, you complete a quick verification.
Step 1 — Click the verify button
In the lobby you'll find a Verify button. Click it to start. This opens a small pop-up form (Discord calls it a modal) — it appears only for you, and nobody else in the server can see what you type.
Step 2 — Enter your date of birth
You'll be asked for your date of birth in MM/DD/YYYY format (month, then day, then year — for example, 07/09/2001), along with your age. Enter both accurately: the bot uses your date of birth to confirm the age you give.
When you submit, you're consenting to AgeVerifier storing your date of birth for the purpose of confirming your age. See How your data is handled below.
Step 3 — The bot checks your age
The bot calculates your age from the date you entered:
- If you meet the server's age requirement, you move forward — either you're approved automatically, or a staff member gives your submission a quick review first.
- If you're below the server's minimum age, you won't be granted access, and depending on the server's settings you may be removed. AgeVerifier does not store sensitive details for anyone identified as underage.
Step 4 — ID verification (only if asked)
Most members never need this. But some servers, or some individual cases, ask for a photo of an ID to confirm your age. If you're asked, you'll receive clear instructions, and you're always free to decline (the server may then choose not to grant you access).
If you do verify with ID, follow safe practices:
- Black out everything except your date of birth. Your name, photo, ID number, and address are not needed.
- Include a small note with the server's name and the current year if requested.
- Remove or delete the ID image once verification is confirmed.
AgeVerifier does not store your ID — only your date of birth. A properly run server will never keep a copy of your ID. If you believe a server is mishandling IDs, you can report it to the AgeVerifier team.
Step 5 — You're verified
Once you're approved, the bot assigns your roles automatically and you'll typically see a welcome message confirming you're in. That's it — you now have access to the server.
Good to know
- If you tried too quickly and got a cooldown message, wait a few minutes and try again. Servers can set a short cooldown between attempts to prevent spam.
- Just changed your profile picture and a check mentioned it? Discord can take up to ~30 minutes to update your avatar everywhere. Wait a bit, then retry.
- Already verified in another server that uses AgeVerifier? The system may recognize you and check that your date of birth is consistent. Always give the same, accurate date.
- The pop-up form is private. Only the bot receives what you enter — other members can't see it.
How your data is handled
By submitting your date of birth, you consent to AgeVerifier storing it solely to verify your age. It may be shared with relevant parties strictly for age-verification purposes. If you're no longer in any server that uses AgeVerifier, your information is kept for a maximum of one year.
You're in control of your data:
/gdpr data— request a copy of everything stored about you (sent to your DMs)./gdpr removal— request deletion of your data. It's removed after a 30-day grace period. (Verifying your age again cancels a pending removal.)
